the kings garden in versailles is still growing fruits and vegetables in the same plots they used when louis quatorze was running the show. training and pruning these trees takes decades of careful attention and planning. pics above of our bounty from the potager market and versailles farmers market. for the money i prefer the potager to the chateau.

having had ridden half a block many times only to discover the velib i was riding only had one functioning gear and no brakes, i really appreciate social signals like this created to save others from the hassle that they just went through. flip the seat so it faces backwards and save someone the trouble of having to find out the hard way that the bike they are riding may kill them.

i just made the switch to a traditional safety razor after i picked up this great travel merkur. it breaks down into 4 pieces and comes with a case for travel. it shaves the same as my old one and blades are 1/10th the price. via manufactum

a household standard in france, the opinel knife, is a simple, inexpensive wooden handled pocket-knife, manufactured since the 1890s in the town of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne in the Savoie region of France. it was invented by joseph opinel in about 1895 and the company is still run by the opinel family. . by the start of ww II as many as 20 million had been sold.

tiffin’s containing the home-packed lunches of almost 200’000 indian workers are transported daily from home to office by dabbawala’s with only one mistake in every 6,000,000 deliveries. i picked mine up at an indian supermarket for $12 (you can find them online here), and since i work from home (and there isn’t a dabbawala for thousands of miles) it’ll be used for picnic’s and potluck’s.
